Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about GeoGames: what it is, how to play, what you need, privacy and advertising.

What is GeoGames?

GeoGames is a free online multiplayer geography game played on Google Street View and real maps. Instead of playing alone, you create a room, invite your friends with a code, and compete or cooperate exploring real cities around the world across different game modes.

Is GeoGames free?

Yes, GeoGames is completely free. To help cover the cost of the Google Maps APIs, the site shows non-intrusive advertising, but there are no subscriptions, mandatory purchases or paywalled features to play.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. There is no need to create an account, register or install any app. You only need a modern browser and an internet connection: you open the site, create or join a room with a code, and start playing.

How do you play?

One player creates a room and shares the code with the others. Inside, you choose the game mode, the city, the team and the role, and start the match. Depending on the mode, you will meet up, chase each other or find items by moving through Street View, with chat, a timer and real-time stats.

What game modes are there?

There are six modes: Meet-up (gather at one point), Rally (driver and co-driver following clues), Solo Rally (a solo challenge), Scotland Yard (a role-based chase), Hide & Seek (guess where the other player is) and GeoBingo (find urban items). Each one completely changes how you explore the city.

Which cities can I play in?

GeoGames includes more than a hundred cities across Europe, Latin America, North America and other regions, from Madrid, Barcelona or Mexico City to Paris, London, New York or Rome. You can see all of them on the Places page.

Can I play with friends and in teams?

Yes. GeoGames is designed for group play: share the room code and your friends join instantly. Depending on the mode you can form teams or compete individually, with roles such as driver, co-driver, chaser or hider.

What do I need to play?

Just an up-to-date web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari) and an internet connection. It works on computer, tablet and phone, with nothing to install. For longer matches, a large screen and a good connection make the experience more comfortable.

Does GeoGames use my real location or GPS?

No. GeoGames does not use your real location or your GPS. The whole game takes place inside Google Street View and maps: your position in the match is virtual, that of the chosen scenario, not your device location.

What data does GeoGames store?

During a match, data such as the room code, the nickname you choose, your virtual position and chat messages are stored temporarily and deleted when the room closes. No account is required and no personal data is sold. You can read the details on the Privacy page.

Why are there ads?

The game relies on the Google Maps Platform APIs, which have a usage cost. Non-intrusive advertising helps cover that cost so GeoGames can stay free. We do not show pop-ups, redirects or full-screen ads that block play.

Which languages is it available in?

GeoGames is available in Spanish, English and Catalan. You can switch language at any time with the menu selector, and content pages such as the guides and city pages are shown in the chosen language.

How do I report a bug or suggest a city?

We are happy to receive suggestions. You can email us or drop by the Discord community to report bugs, discuss matches or propose new cities. You will find the contact options on the About page.
