About GeoGames
GeoGames is a free online multiplayer geography game played on Google Street View and real maps.
What GeoGames is
GeoGames is a platform for playing geography and urban-orientation challenges with friends using Street View and real maps of more than 100 cities around the world. Instead of guessing a location on your own, GeoGames is designed for group games: you explore real streets, cooperate or compete in teams and solve specific objectives in each city.
The project's goal is simple: to turn map exploration into a social game that is quick to set up and easy to share, with nothing to install and straight from the browser.
How it works
One player creates a room and shares the code with the others. Inside the room you choose the game mode, the city, the team and each player's role. When everyone is ready, the host starts the game and the challenge begins on Street View.
Each room includes chat, real-time player tracking, an optional timer and a final summary with statistics. GeoGames works on desktop and mobile, and is designed to be played while you talk over voice.
Game modes
GeoGames offers several modes with their own rules: Meet-up (reuniting at a point), Rally (completing checkpoints as a Driver/Co-driver pair), Solo Rally (a solo time-trial challenge), Scotland Yard (a cops-and-robbers chase), Hide & Seek (hiding and finding hiding spots in Street View) and GeoBingo (completing a card of urban elements).
Technology
GeoGames uses Google Maps Platform (Maps and Street View Static/JavaScript API) for the panoramas and the maps, on top of a custom PHP backend that manages the rooms, the roles, the game state and the synchronisation between players. No registration or installation required.
Using Google's APIs has a cost. To help keep the service online, GeoGames shows non-intrusive advertising; you can check how we handle data on the privacy and cookies pages.
Who is behind it
GeoGames is an independent project developed and maintained by JimXBCN. It is continuously updated with new cities, modes and improvements based on community feedback.
