About the city
Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire and a Unesco site, is wedged at about 3,400 metres in a valley of the Peruvian Andes. Its heart is the Plaza de Armas, ringed by arcades, the Cathedral and the Compañía church, all resting on perfectly fitted Inca stone foundations. Streets like Hatunrumiyoc keep Inca walls with the famous twelve-angled stone.
The uphill San Blas quarter is a maze of cobbled lanes, craft workshops and blue-and-white balconies. Red-tiled roofs and the surrounding mountains complete an unmistakable scene.
Pistas para orientarte
The mix of Inca stone walls at the base and whitewashed colonial houses above is unique to Cusco. Look for the red-tiled roofs, the very steep cobbled streets, the altitude (lots of sky and nearby mountains) and tourist signs in Spanish and Quechua. Steep, labyrinthine San Blas is ideal for Hide & Seek and Scotland Yard; the Plaza de Armas suits Meet-up.
