About the city

Madrid, the capital of Spain, packs its centre with squares and broad avenues that are easy to recognise in Street View. Puerta del Sol, home to Kilometre Zero and the bear-and-strawberry-tree statue, is the heart from which streets such as Preciados, Arenal and Mayor branch out, along with Gran Vía, the grand avenue of cinemas and early twentieth-century buildings. The arcaded Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral stand nearby.

To the east, the Paseo del Prado links the museum triangle (Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofía) with the Cibeles fountain and the Puerta de Alcalá, next to the Retiro Park. Districts like La Latina, Malasaña and Chueca add narrow streets, taverns and façades with glazed bay windows that are typical of the city.

Pistas para orientarte

To find your way, look for the Madrid Metro signs (a red-and-blue diamond), the white taxis with a diagonal red stripe and European plates marked E. Kiosks, old ceramic advertising tiles and brick buildings with bay windows give away the centre. The alleys of La Latina work well for Hide & Seek and Scotland Yard; the more open Gran Vía and the Retiro suit Rally and Meet-up.
