About the city
Bilbao spreads along both banks of the Nervión estuary, in the green heart of the Basque Country. The Old Town, with its medieval Seven Streets, the Santiago Cathedral and the Ribera Market, contrasts with the nineteenth-century Ensanche across the water, built around Gran Vía and Plaza Moyua.
Beside the estuary rises the titanium Guggenheim Museum by Frank Gehry, with Louise Bourgeois's giant spider and the flower-covered Puppy as modern symbols of the city. Bridges like Calatrava's Zubizuri stitch the two banks together.
Pistas para orientarte
The estuary with its bridges and the green hillsides ringing the city give Bilbao away. Look for bilingual Basque-and-Spanish signs, Norman Foster's glass Metro entrances (the fosteritos) and the often grey, rainy sky. The compact Old Town works well for Hide & Seek; the Ensanche and the Guggenheim waterfront suit Rally and Meet-up.
