About the city

Santiago, the capital of Chile, spreads across a valley with the snow-capped Andes dominating the eastern horizon. Its centre is organised around the Plaza de Armas, with the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Central Post Office, and the Alameda (Avenida Libertador O'Higgins), the great axis along which the La Moneda palace appears.

Santa Lucía hill and San Cristóbal hill offer viewpoints over the city. Districts like Lastarria and Bellas Artes bring streets with cafés, theatres and early twentieth-century architecture, while the civic quarter concentrates the institutional buildings.

Pistas para orientarte

The snow-capped range to the east is Santiago's perfect compass. Notice the civic-centre buildings, the well-signposted Metro (one of the largest in Latin America) and the smog that sometimes blurs the background. You will see Chilean plates and signs in Chilean Spanish. The gridded historic centre suits Rally and Scotland Yard; the hills and parks suit Meet-up.
