About the city
Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, arranges its centre around grand, European-looking avenues. Avenida 9 de Julio, one of the widest in the world, is presided over by the Obelisk; nearby lie the Plaza de Mayo, the Casa Rosada and the Cathedral, and the pedestrian Florida street for shopping. The Montserrat district keeps early twentieth-century buildings.
To the north, Recoleta adds French-style mansions and its famous cemetery; to the south, San Telmo keeps cobbled streets and low houses, and La Boca brings the colour of Caminito. Grand cafés and theatres round out the porteño atmosphere.
Pistas para orientarte
You will recognise Buenos Aires by its very wide avenues, European-style buildings, colourful buses (colectivos) and the signs of cafés and grill houses. The Obelisk and the sheer width of 9 de Julio are unmistakable. You will see Argentine plates and the signposted Subte (metro). Cobbled, low-rise San Telmo suits Hide & Seek; the microcentro and 9 de Julio suit Rally and Meet-up.
